Dizziness is a feeling of lightheadedness or unsteadiness that can be quite unsettling. It’s a widespread issue, affecting millions of people every year. But what causes dizziness, and how can you find relief? Here, we explore two major causes of dizziness: inner ear problems and dehydration.
An essential component of balance is the inner ear. Tiny canals within it contain fluid and hair cells that send signals to your brain about your head’s position. When these canals become irritated or inflamed, it can disrupt these signals, leading to dizziness and a sensation of spinning known as vertigo.
Treatment for inner ear problems often involves vestibular rehabilitation therapy. This specialized exercise program helps retrain the brain to interpret signals from the inner ear more effectively. In some cases, medications may also be prescribed to manage nausea and dizziness.
Dehydration simply means your body lacks enough fluids. This can happen due to sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or even not drinking enough water. When dehydrated, your blood volume decreases, affecting blood flow to the brain, which can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, and fatigue.
Treating dehydration is usually straightforward. Simply increasing your fluid intake is key. Water is always the best option, but electrolyte-rich beverages can also be helpful, especially if you’ve been losing fluids through sweating or illness.
